Netgear FS605 Platinum Series 5 Port 10/100 Unmanaged Switch
If you're setting up a network, you are going to need a switch to sit at the centre of your network amd direct communications between computers. Netgear's Platinum Series 5 Port 10/100 Switch FS605 is a five-port switch, so you can connect up to five computers. It supports fast Ethernet, running at 100 Mbps, but is also compatible with the slower Ethernet standard at 10 Mbps.
A switch is a device to which all computers in a network or section of a network send their data. A switch works out which computer should receive the data and sends it out to just that port. This is different from a hub, which directs everything it receives to all available ports, leaving it up to the receiving computers to work out if the data is intended for them.
It shouldn't be hard to see that a switch is a lot quicker than a hub. All ports on a switch have the potential to run at the full speed of the network to which they're connected. In a hub, the top speed of any port is the speed of the network divided by the number of ports in the hub. There's also a limit to the number of hubs you can connect together to extend a network--there's no such limit when connecting switches.
The FS605, about the size of a Pocket PC or portable CD drive, has a set of six LEDs on its front edge. The first shows when the power from the separate mains power pack is connected, while the other five show when individual ports in the switch are active. They shine yellow for an Ethernet connection and green for a fast Ethernet one, and flash as data passes through them.
You can position this Netgear switch horizontally on the desktop or vertically using the stand provided or wall-mounting. With all recent versions of Windows, all the software you need to set up a network is built into the operating system and no extra programs are needed or supplied by Netgear.
Should you need to connect the FS605 to another switch to extend your network, you don't need to worry about using special cables or designating one of the ports as an uplink between the two switches. This device is intelligent enough to work it out itself and any of the five ports will automatically switch to an uplink mode as required. --Simon Williams

D-Link DGS-1005D - 5-Port Gigabit Green Ethernet Switch
D-Link DGS-1005D 5-Port Green Ethernet Gigabit Desktop SwitchThis function support allows your servers to directly connect to the switch for fast, reliable data transfer. At 2000Mbps full duplex, the switch provides high-speed data pipes to your servers with minimum data transfer loss. All ports support auto-negotiation of MDI/MDIX cross over. This eliminates the need for cross over cables or uplink ports. Any port can simply plug to a server, a hub or a switch, using the usual straight-through twisted-pair cable. The switch integrates seamlessly with your existing network equipment, be it Ethernet, Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet, dispensing you of the need to replace any hardware or software. With 10/100/1000Mbps auto-sensing, auto-negotiation for every port, plus the ability to exist with your Cat. 5 wall wiring, network installation is a breeze. All you need to do is plug the cables to the switch, and your network is up and running in a matter of minutes. The latest hardware revision of the switch (D1) introduces the first energy-saving features in the networking arena. By sensing whether attached devices are ON or OFF and estimating the cable length, the switch is able to adjust its power consumption, for a total saving of up to 27%. This desktop switch offers an economical way for the SOHO and small and medium business (SMB) to benefit from the increased bandwidth of Gigabit Ethernet. It provides 5 Gigabit ports for fast server deployment to meet increasing network load. With plugand- play installation and copper Gigabit ports capable of connecting to your existing Cat. 5 twisted-pair cable, this device instantly enhances your workgroup's performance without requiring you to install expensive fibre cables or to go through complex reconfiguration. 5 Gigabit ports provide an inexpensive alternative solution to fibre-optic. Hama USB 2.0 Hub 1:4,black,bus-powered
Sometimes the number of USB ports on your computer or laptop just isn't enough!
With the Hama USB 2.0 Hub you can give yourself an extra four ports. This allows you to have the more permanent devices like an external hard drive, scanner, printer or a keyboard constantly attached to your computer or laptop via the USB ports that are already available, while having an extra four ports for other devices that need to be used.
With the Hama Hub you can be uploading photos from your camera, listening to your iPod and having a Skype chat with your friend across the country all at the same time! With some hubs you get an extra four USB ports but they are placed so close together that you can't use them all at the same time, with the Hub from Hama this is not a problem, the ports are spaced far enough away from each other allowing you to use them all at once.
The cable on the Hub is long and flexible which allows you to have the Hub tucked discreetly behind the computer. The Hub includes bus overvoltage protection for PCs preventing a short circuit. Give yourself plenty of USB space with the USB hub from Hama.
